The Elks

The 35th Reunion was held at the Elks Club in Newport.  This stately Victorian building is also known as the "Jeremiah Stitts House" built in 1879.  It was designed by noted Newport architect George Champlain Mason who also designed the Newport Mansion "Chepstow".

In addition to its, beautiful wraparound porch, the building contains several large function rooms, ornate woodwork, period lighting and many large mirrors.

We hope you enjoy the pictures of this beautiful building that was the backdrop for our 35th Reunion.

Planning and Setup

Our 35th Reunion Committee put a lot of thought into the style and decor for the event.  The goal was to be elegant, but practical.

Each table had white linens, fresh cut flowers, a questionnaire for the next reunion and a disposable camera.  Balloons with the colors of each school were set up around the dining room and dance hall. There were reserved tables for De La Salle and St. Catherine grads so those classmates could sit together.  (Flowers and vases were designed and built by a sub-committee headed up by Karen Vaillancourt Miller.  The questionnaire was designed by a sub-committee headed up by Joan McCarthy and Cherie Dennet Saunders).

At the head of the room, a table with an overturned place setting and six lit candles remembered our missing classmates from the three schools (designed by Joan McCarthy).

Another sub-committee (headed by Ron Viveiros) collected items for the silent auction fundraiser.  The buffet tables were set up by the caterer, but the hors d'oeuvres and dessert tables were set up by the 35th Reunion Committee.

Cherie Dennet Saunders sent out hundreds of invitations to class members from all three schools using their last known address.  She also sent email reminders to all classmates who had signed up for the reunion.  Barbara Cunha collected the money for reservations and put together the master list that was used for tracking attendance and printing name tags.

Prizes for the Alumni traveling the furthest distance to the Reunion were handled by committee representatives from each school.  The committee even remembered to provide a birthday cake for Dan Sullivan (RHS) who's birthday fell on the same day as the Reunion.

A photographer was hired to take pictures of the Alumni as they arrived and also to take candid photographs throughout the event.  These photographs were received from the photographer electronically and posted onto this website by Larry Gomes.

As a result of all of this preparation, the reunion went very smoothly and we have a website of photographs to remember it by.  Please thank your 35th Reunion Committee members the next time that you see them.  They worked many long hours to make this reunion a success.
