JT graduated from URI with a degree in sociology.  He lives in Middletown and works for BMW of Newport focusing on ways to improve customer service.  

(Editors Note:  Probably one of the few of us in our class that actually gets to use their degree in their job.)

Obituary - John T. MacKinnon

August 8, 1953 - February 27, 2017

HUDSON, Ohio – John Thomas MacKinnon, 63, of Hudson, OH,  (formerly of Middletown, RI) passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 in Akron, Ohio.

 Born on August 8, 1953 in Everett, MA, “JT” was a 61 Year Resident of King Road in Middletown.  He was the son of the late Mary Reardon MacKinnon and Paul W. MacKinnon, Sr. also formerly of King Road. JT attended Middletown Elementary Schools and was a 1971 honors graduate of De La Salle Academy in Newport. JT went on the get a BA in Sociology with High Distinction from the University of Rhode Island at Kingston.

 Since February 2015, JT had been a Resident of Hudson, OH, where he lived with his Brother Paul, Jr. and sister-in-law, Lorraine (Sampson) MacKinnon.   “Uncle Jay” is also survived by a nephew, two nieces and their spouses, as well as ten grandnieces and nephews:  nephew Paul, III and spouse Maria of Hindhead, Surrey, UK, and their five children, Jan (16), Anna (14), Jozef (12), Thomas (3), and Helena (1) MacKinnon; niece Jennifer MacKinnon Gojdics and spouse Robert R. Gojdics of Hudson, OH, and their 3 children, Addison (18), Taylor (18), and Michael “Jack” (15) Gojdics; and niece Rebecca MacKinnon Tharpe and spouse Bryan A. Tharpe of Nolensville, TN,  and their two children, Andrew MacKinnon Tharpe (14) and Ella Claire Tharpe (9).  JT took great joy, especially in his later years, in his nephew, nieces and grandnephews and nieces.

 JT was blessed with many life-long caring and loyal friends. 

A memorial service will be held in Newport on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

 


Below is a copy of the handout provided by JT's family at the celebration of his life.
A bagpiper opened the ceremony with Amazing Grace followed by a poem reading, then some stories
from people who were positively impacted by having JT in their lives.
 The family then hosted a delicious lunch followed by a closing song from the bagpiper.
In addition to JT's family members, classmates Mike Behan, Bill Winthrop and Larry Gomes
were at the event along with several other Newporter's who knew JT.
